How to Disable Common Pop-Up Blockers

Listed below are some of the most popular Pop-up Blocking software and how to disable them if you have problems displaying pop-up windows.

There are literally dozens of pop-up blockers, so it’s nearly impossible to explain how to disable all of them. And software changes frequently so the specifics of how to disable pop-up blockers change but the below should help you even if the instructions are slightly different than what you see.

To disable a pop-up blocker find your software (Web browser or pop-up blocker) below and follow the instructions.

Internet Explorer Browser

Pop-up blocking is directly integrated into Internet Explorer and by default it is turned on.

To disable pop-up blocking, follow these instructions:

  1. Click “Tools” to display the drop-down menu
  2. Hover over “Pop-up Blocker

  3. Click on “Turn Off Pop-up Blocker

Google Chrome Browser

Google Chrome automatically prevents pop-ups windows from displaying.

To disable blocked pop-ups for a specific site, follow these instructions:

  1. If pop-ups have been blocked, you’ll see the blocked pop-up alert icon Blocked pop-up alert icon for Chrome in the address bar. Click the icon to see a list of the blocked pop-ups.
  2. Click the link for the pop-up window that you’d like to see.
  3. To always see pop-ups for the site, select “Always show pop-ups from [site].” The site will be added to the exceptions list, which you can manage in the Content Settings dialog.

To manually allow pop-ups from a site, follow these instructions:

  1. Click the  icon Allow pop-up icon for Chrome on the browser toolbar to show the menu.
  2. Select “Settings
  3. Click “Show advanced settings”.
  4. In the Privacy section, click the “Content settings” button.
  5. In the Pop-ups section, click “Manage exceptions”.

Firefox Browser

When blocking a pop-up, Firefox displays an information bar (if it hasn’t been previously dismissed), as well as an icon Blocked pop-up alert icon for Firefox in the location bar.

To disable blocked pop-ups, follow these instructions:

  1. Click either the “Options” button in the info bar or the icon in the location bar and a menu is displayed with the following choices:
    • Allow/Block pop-ups for this site
    • Edit Pop-up Blocker Options…
    • Don’t show info bar when pop-ups are blocked
    • (show the blocked pop-up)
  2. Select “Allow/Block pop-ups for this site”

Safari Browser

To disable the Safari pop-up blocker, follow these instructions:

  1. Click the “Safari” menu item to display the drop-down menu
  2. Uncheck the “Block Pop-Up Windows” menu choice

 Yahoo Toolbar

The Yahoo toolbar can be installed in different Web browsers, here’s an example of what it looks like:

  2. Click the downward pointing arrow on the right side of the icon
  3. In the drop-down menu, uncheck “Enable Pop-up Blocker

Google Toolbar

The Google toolbar can be installed in different Web browsers, here’s an example of what it looks like:

  1. You’ll see the number of pop-ups blocked

  2. Right click on the browser toolbar (not the Google toolbar) to display the browser pop-up menu, it may look like this

  3. Click “Google” to (temporarily) remove the Google toolbar

After you’ve finished with the Web page(s) that had blocked content, enable to Google toolbar again.

Note: some version of the Google toolbar allow pop-ups for specific sites but this doesn’t always work and frequently the entire toolbar needed to be temporarily removed.

MSN Toolbar

The MSN toolbar can be installed in different Web browsers, here’s an example of what it looks like:

To disable the pop-up blocker, follow these instructions:

  1. Find the pop-up blocking icon

  2. Click the downward pointing arrow on the right side of the icon
  3. In the drop-down menu, click “Allow Pop-ups” or “Allow Pop-ups for this Site

After you’ve finished with the Web page(s) that had blocked content, you can block pop-ups again.

AOL Toolbar

The AOL toolbar can be installed in different Web browsers, here’s an example of what it looks like:

To disable the pop-up blocker, follow these instructions:

  1. Find the pop-up blocking icon

After you’ve finished with the Web page(s) that had blocked content, you can block pop-ups again.

Pop-Up Stopper

The Pop-Up Stopper toolbar can be installed in different Web browsers, here’s an example of what it looks like:

  1. Find the pop-up blocking icon

After you’ve finished with the Web page(s) that had blocked content, you can block pop-ups again.

PopUpCop

The PopUpCop toolbar can be installed in different Web browsers, here’s an example of what it looks like:

To disable the pop-up blocker, follow these instructions:

  1. Right click on the downward pointing arrow to the right of the shield, you should see this pop-up menuDisable blocked pop-up for PopUp Cop
  2. Click on “Allow popups from this site

Note, sometimes that still doesn’t work, then pop-up the menu and click on “Disable PopUpCop” to disable PopUpCop completely.

After you’ve finished with the Web page(s) that had blocked content, you can enable PopUpCop.
